Weeks after the occurrence of Hurricane Irma, many residents of the Rehabilitation Center at Hollywood Hills passed away due to the loss of the facility’s air conditioners.

On September 13, eight of the residents ranging from ages 71-99 have already passed away due to the living conditions. Since then 6 more have died, after failing to evacuate the residents suffering in the sweltering heat. At the age of 57, Dolores Biamonte was the youngest to die at the Rehabilitation Center.

According to the nursing home administrator, Jorge Carballo, the center did not lose power during the storm, but it lost a transformer that powers the air conditioning. Hurricane Irma knocked over a tree which destroyed the transformer powering the air conditioning systems in the facility. Many of the suffering residents were moved next to fans and spot coolers.

The state of Florida suggested the center to call 911 if a serious situation ever arouse. This is something the center failed to do. They also chose not to evacuate their patients to one of the largest hospitals in Florida located just across the street from the Rehabilitation Center. The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services said in a statement that the facility will be terminated Friday “due to their failure to meet Medicare’s basic health and safety requirements.”
