Competitive sports have progressively taken a turn for the worse. Parents of dedicated athletes are spending ridiculous amounts of money for their children to receive athletic scholarships, which are very rare. According to the New York Times, Mr. Dorsch stated “spending on sports has grown so high – up to 10.5% of gross income.” Research shows that the average household income for citizens of Portsmouth is $67k; using Mr. Dorsch’s research this would mean each family would be funding about $6,700 for their children to participate in athletics yearly.

The price to participate in year-round athletics, along with receiving elite training is a growing market, which allows organizations to have the ability to raise membership prices each and every year. According to Dallas News, on average club team tuition costs $2,000-$3,000 a year without fees and other expenses such as tournaments and uniforms. This is making year-round club organization’s exclusive to only wealthy families capable.

Expectations of parents and athletes are continuing to rise along with the financial aspects. Some parents of these athletes are in denial of their children’s ability. Many believe their children’s abilities will eventually payoff through athletic scholarships and aid when it comes to college years. Mark Hyman, an assistant professor at George Washington University studies show that under 5% of athletes participate in college athletics and 3% of them receive athletic aid.
