Mental health is something that needs attention, especially when it comes to highschoolers. Although the Portsmouth High School guidance office works hard to give students what they need, they feel there’s room for improvement.
Laurie Relinski, a PHS guidance counselor, stated, “there’s always a need for more services.” However, with that being said, she is confident that “teachers are really in tune with the kids.”
There are multiple mental health and behavioral health resources at PHS. Sophia Spainhower, a therapist from Seacoast Mental Health, is in the building twice a week. She provides therapy for kids during school hours. Some students are unable to get counseling, due to the fact that therapy facilities have a long waitlist, and due to the high costs.
Eilee Marousek is PHS’ licensed outreach counselor and is the founder of the Wellness club. This club provides a supportive, chill environment, where students can talk about anything they have going on. Her goal down the road is for PHS to have a full time social worker in the guidance department, and better staff education when it comes to mental health.
According to Marousek, the guidance counselors can only do so much, but a social worker would be able to put together better referrals for kids who may be struggling students that need additional services outside of PHS.
“Some days are hard, but it’s never the kids,” Marousek stated, adding she loves her job and enjoys helping kids work towards bettering themselves.
