I’m a senior at Portsmouth High School (PHS), and since I was interested in a career as a firefighter, I wanted to take a class to learn more about firefighting. In my research, I learned that the Dover High School (DHS) offered a Fire Science class in their Career Technical Education (CTE) program.

I was able to contact the DHS CTE administration and learned that they offer multiple classes for other students from other schools to take classes that their schools don’t offer.

Some examples of classes that DHS offers are Animal Science, Biomedical Sciences, Firefighter and Emergency Medical Services (EMS), Cosmetology, and Naval Science.

I currently attend DHS in the mornings for the first block, and I take the Fire Science CTE class.  To finish out my day, I go back to PHS to attend my second, third, and fourth blocks. The Fire class is taught by Dover firefighters and runs throughout the whole year. By the end of the class, I will be a certified 1 firefighter.

Micheala Silcocks is a junior from Spaulding High School who also is taking the fire 1 class. She found out about the program through one of her friends who had previously taken the class. She says she likes the idea of going to two different schools because she has friends at both and enjoys the different choices of classes. Micheala hopes to be a professional firefighter and wants to take Fire 2 and EMS next year as a senior at DHS.
