In the realm of high school sports, transitions mark the path for student-athletes seeking new challenges and opportunities. Two distinct narratives showcase the experiences of those transferring out of and into Portsmouth High School, each driven by different aspirations and reflections on their athletic journeys.
Elijah Josey, a current junior and student-athlete at PHS, will be attending Green Farms Academy in Westport, Connecticut next year for wrestling.
When asked about the reason behind the transfer Josey highlighted his deep love for wrestling as the driving force.
“I am transferring out [of PHS] primarily because of sports. I think in order to reach that next level for my sport, this is the right move,” he said.
Reflecting on his time at Portsmouth, Josey expressed moments of nostalgia and appreciation: “I think I’ll definitely miss those connections I’ve built here. Especially with my coaches, teammates, and friends.”
Royce Josey, Josey’s father and the PHS varsity wrestling coach, said he’s very positive about Elijah’s transfer. “He worked very hard, but I will definitely miss him,” said Royce Josey, and continued saying that their family is tight and it will be a different dynamic once he leaves.
Royce Josey is excited to see what the future holds for his son.
Along with Josey, Brooks Connors, a junior, transferred to PHS from Winnacunnet High School.
He describes what he was looking for when transferring: “I looked at the football team, and asked around if the academics were good.”
“I’ve enjoyed most of my classes, and have made a lot of friends from them,” Connors remarked. “I felt like I had a great year for football and made close friends from that as well.”
As these student-athletes continue their respective journeys of transferring in and out of Portsmouth High School, they persevere and inspire others by setting high standards for themselves as they pursue their athletic goals despite changes and fresh starts.
