“Anyone But You” is the new rom-com released on December 22, 2023. It is distributed by Sony Pictures and is directed by Will Gluck. This is a humorous movie that captures modern-day dating subjects. The main characters are Bea who is played by Sydney Sweeny and Ben played by Glen Powell.
“Anyone But You” follows two single people who met one day at a cafe and went on a date that they felt was magical but the next morning it quickly went from love to hate. Then, after a couple of months of no contact, they find themselves meeting again in a bar through Bea’s sister and Ben’s friend who are dating and want to get their friends together for a night out. The night is filled with constant bickering. They then both get invited to the same wedding a few months later in Australia for Beas’ sister and Ben’s friend.
They end up on the same flight and the back-and-forth arguing starts again. When they make it to Australia they stress their family out with all the destruction they have caused. Ben’s ex, who he was still in love with, lives in Australia and was invited to the wedding. Bea’s parents invited her ex-fiance, this is when they decided to start fake dating so he could get her back and she didn’t have to constantly hear everyone telling her to get back with her fiance again. This fake relationship quickly became very messy and confusing. Although their relationship started fake over time they began to realize they still felt the same way they did that first night they met.
I enjoyed this movie and can say it’s a good watch. It was super adorable and funny, too. I liked how it wasn’t your typical rom-com about a funny couple. They added rough changes in a relationship while keeping it humorous. This is a perfect movie to have a cute movie night with your friends. I also like how the movie wasn’t insanely long. It was only an hour and twenty-three minutes. It has 51% rotten tomatoes already. “Has the charm, wit, swoony romance, and most importantly star chemistry that has been solely missing from the recent lackluster entries in the genre” stated Marya E. Gates from Rotten Tomato.
However, I felt like they could have spent more time focusing on the shifts in their relationship, because that’s just how life works. They also had good scenery and a good aesthetic. They did a nice job with the wardrobe for the characters, everything was modern and trendy, but also fit the characters and showed who they were through their clothes. I also think the chemistry for the characters was perfect on and off set, which helped with reviews because everyone was going crazy thinking they were together in real life. “Anyone But You” is an example of a modern relationship where communication is key because there are sometimes misunderstandings.
