Track is a very popular and well-attended sport at Portsmouth High School. Track is a great way to get in cardio, support your school, and develop friendships.
Tommy Flynn, a sophomore at PHS said that track is “a great environment to be in.” This season is Flynn’s first year running for the track team.
Flynn, who is on JV, runs long distances for the school, participates in each meet, and always puts his best foot forward to get the best placement he can in each race.
Ethan Lander, a junior at PHS, is a similar runner as he started winter track last year and plays soccer in the fall season and lacrosse in the spring. Lander participates in the long jump and sprints for the school. He says that the track is a way to keep in shape and hang out with friends.
“I look up to Ahmed Nada,” said Lander. Nada is a former Clipper student and track runner who now is an assistant coach. He was a star track athlete who to this day holds multiple school records. Lander loves to support his school and plans on running track again next year.
Theo Beattie, a junior at PHS, also looks up to Jake Haley, a PHS alumni who graduated last year and attends Brown University for track. Beattie is a skilled runner participating in Fall, Winter and Spring track and is always looking to break records and bring the track team to the top.
“I run everyday during the week, and take the weekends off,” said Beattie, when asked what he does in the summer to stay in shape.
Beattie encourages the student body to support the team by coming to events and the state meet for the track team. The next meet is on Saturday, January 20 at the University of New Hampshire track at 10 in the morning.
