Portsmouth High School has recently seen an increase in vandalism in the bathrooms, causing concern to students and faculty members. The acts of vandalism challenge the custodial staff and the school’s environment.
Recent events include urine and feces on the floor, drawing on the stalls, and many more disrespectful acts.
Dale Durgin, a janitor at PHS, expressed his disappointment over the vandalism incidents, describing it as “very disrespectful.”
Durgin said, “The school belongs to everyone,” highlighting the responsibility to keep a clean and safe environment at school.
Charlie Grossman, Assistant Principal at PHS, said something similar about the vandalists: “People vandalize because they think they are controlling something.”
“We are understaffed by four janitors, so it makes life more difficult for us. It’s an issue that needs to be addressed,” Durgin also added.
Vera Haus, a business teacher at PHS, echoed similar thoughts and said, “These are the actions of immature students who need to respect the facilities.”
One of the consequences of vandalism is the inconvenience it causes to students. Gar Hindle, a junior at PHS, communicated his frustration about the long walk it takes in order to find an open bathroom.
“Missing class for long periods of time just to find a bathroom is inconvenient,” said Hindle, shedding light on the issue’s impact on students.
The disruption caused by vandalism affects the school’s cleanliness and the daily routines of students, all of which take away valuable learning time.
The PaperClip has reported on this issue multiple times, and the vandalism has still continued.
If you see any acts of vandalism throughout the school, please report it to administration immediately.
